阿勒泰地处阿尔泰山脉南麓，阻挡了来自北冰洋的湿润气流，带来了充沛的降水，造就了森林、草原、湖泊等多样地貌，也吸引了大批野生鸟类。科克苏湿地内有白天鹅、黑鹳、大鸨等183种野生鸟类，候鸟占比极高，夏候鸟一般在春暖花开时“入驻”，天气转凉时“离开”，而现在正是冬候鸟迁入期，一般停留90到190天。让候鸟在这里留得住，成为管护站重要的工作之一。
